Hello China - Donegal Calling!

06/02/2014 23:10

Students in Cloughfin N.S. have been busy learning about China and how the Chinese celebrate their New Year this week as The Year of the Horse commenced last Friday, January 31st. As well as learning about the country and Chinese traditions, pupils have made lanterns, horses and dragons, which they have displayed in the corridor.

There was immense excitement when Mr. Campbell contacted a friend of his who works for Bord Bia in China and asked her if she would agree to skype us to answer some of the many questions that the pupils had. Without hesitation, Yan concurred and all of the pupils and staff gathered together this morning for the session.

Yan joined us along with her lovely little daughter. Pupils were amazed with the quality of the connection from the other side of the world. It was 10.30 a.m. in Cloughfin, but it was 6.30 p.m in China. Yan showed us some Chinese money - a 100 yuan note.

When asked about the population of China, Yan told pupils that there were over 1.3 billion people living in the country and that the whole of Ireland would have the same population as one of their cities. She also taught the pupils how to say hello and goodbye in her native tongue. Watch the video below.

It was a wonderful experience for us all and we would like to thank Yan and her family for taking the time to share all the information with us.

However, this is not the end, Ms.Farry has some visitors lined up to come to the school to tell us about their experience of China. So watch this space over the next few weeks ....
